SYNOPSIS: Perhaps you know the myths. Furious, benevolent Gods.
A tree that binds nine realms.
A hammer stronger than any weapon.
And someday, the end of everything.
But few have heard of me.
Sigyn Odindottir has spent a lifetime trying to prove to her father that she’s ready for a title, but no amount of training or study has done the trick. In a last-ditch effort to change Odin’s mind, she turns to the one person she probably shouldn’t.
Loki’s reputation for deceit and mischief precedes him, but so does his skill for shapeshifting, scheming, and lighting things on fire with the snap of his fingers. If she can keep him under control, Sigyn stands to learn a great deal. Maybe enough to crawl out from the shadows of her brothers. As Sigyn’s story weaves through the Norse myths, she finds there’s more to Loki than she understood, and perhaps more to herself as well. When Ragnarok comes, what will she regret? This unique take on Norse Mythology follows Sigyn through the stories we know and love, challenging the ideas of right and wrong, fate and choice, love and loyalty. Featuring imperfect characters, an LGBTQA+ cast, and a rollercoaster of emotion, The Goddess of Nothing At All asks “What if we’ve been on the wrong side all along?”

So I must admit I had no idea who Sigyn was in Norse Mythology. But to be fair beyond the popular, big names like Odin, Thor and Loki I don't know much at all. And thats the point, how is it someone who hasn't actively sought out to read about Norse Mythology in the past, can still know about these figures, ( all male figures, I might add) but is hard pressed to name any of the female counterparts?? historical recordings are notorious ( Greek mythology Im definitely side-eyeing you here!) for regulating female counterparts to bit parts; the usual roles of; the daughter, the wife, the mother and far too often as the victims of men. And its only recently we are getting a more balanced, deep dive into these figures, and the nuances of their stories are finally being explored and allowed to surface.
That long introduction was just to say that when I read the synopsis for The Goddess of Nothing at All and finding out it was about the wife of Loki, who by the way, I had no idea was married(I blame Marvel) I had my interest piqued and immediately wanted to know more. And the author definitely delivered! she has created a world that was at once wondrous and terrible, there is definitely a lot of brutality and prejudice to be found and unpacked, ( there are many trigger warnings so please do read them before you start) and I felt the author did a great job. Sigyn was such an interesting character that I couldn't help but find myself invested in her life. She is instantly relatable; a woman in a man's world ( is it more apt to say a Goddess in a God's world??) who has to work twice as hard as her brothers and yet still not be given her rightful due. Her development from wanting to please her father and be seen as worthy by him to slowly discovering her own worth was a treat to see. We also get to really explore Loki as a character in his own right away from under the shadows of Thor. The story spans a huge stretch of time, but as the gods are near immortal that is only natural. We see so many events in Sigyn's life play out, the love, the heartaches the betrayals. The author's writing style is enthralling, and it made it feel like I was reading an epic tale of old, giving flesh to well known and less known characters. ultimately creating an immersive world and captivating characters. Utterly beautiful and would highly recommend it to all who love reading mythology or simply just a well written epic story.
